Classroom Format
The classroom is divided into learning centers where a variety of hands-on materials and meaningful activities are available for the children. Centers are designed to meet specific academic goals and are both curriculum-oriented (math, science, writing, etc.) and theme-based (Fire Safety, Family, etc.). Students will routinely work in small groups to actively practice, apply, and extend skills and concepts introduced during circle or group time.
During circle and group time, the teacher initiates discussions about various topics, special themes, or group projects. Children learn through singing, movement, show and tell, and story time. Emphasis is placed on helping the children learn how to follow directions, problem solving / predicting outcomes, and promoting listening skills and self-expression. At times, speakers will be invited to share a special skill or cultural tradition.
